Black flakes are a symptom, not one diagnosis. Determine whether they appear in an empty rinse, only with detergent or additives, or only with particular laundry, then inspect visible surfaces and use the washer's approved cleaning cycle.

Do not diagnose particles by color alone#

Dark particles may look similar even when they come from different places. This page does not declare that every flake is mold, detergent, rubber, mineral material, or a broken part. Instead, record the evidence that can separate the washer from the load and the additives.

Use a white bowl, cloth, or paper towel only to make particles easier to see. Record whether they are soft or hard, smear or stay intact, float or sink, and appear once or repeatedly. Those observations are routing evidence, not a laboratory identification.

Step 1: run an empty comparison cycle#

Remove all laundry. Do not add detergent, softener, bleach, or a cleaning product. Run the shortest empty rinse or rinse-and-spin allowed by the model. Check the drum and discharged water area after the cycle.

  • Flakes appear in the empty cycle: the washer, its water path, or residue already inside the machine remains a plausible source.
  • No flakes appear until detergent or softener is added: the additive, dose, dispenser, or interaction with the wash water deserves attention.
  • No flakes appear except with certain laundry: inspect the garments, pockets, coatings, and other items in that load.

Manufacturer troubleshooting uses this kind of empty-cycle comparison to separate washer residue from material introduced by laundry or additives.

Step 2: inspect only visible surfaces#

With the washer off, inspect the drum or tub, dispenser cups, and accessible surfaces. On a front-loader, include the visible door gasket and any model-provided service panel or pump filter described in the manual. On a top-loader, inspect the visible tub, dispenser, and accessible wash-plate or agitator surfaces.

Do not push a hand across a jagged edge. If a gasket is torn, the tub has a sharp or damaged surface, or particles look rubbery or oily and return after an approved clean, stop the experiment and request service. Visible damage is not something another dose of cleaner should be asked to repair.

Step 3: check detergent and additive use#

Official manufacturer guidance recognizes that excess detergent or fabric softener can leave residue inside the washer and transfer to laundry. Compare the amount used with the detergent label and washer manual. High-efficiency machines require compatible detergent and the correct dose for the load and water conditions.

Clean the dispenser as the manual directs. Hardened or retained product in a dispenser can continue entering later cycles. Do not combine products to “strip” the machine. Mixing chemicals creates a new problem and destroys the value of the comparison test.

Step 4: use the approved cleaning cycle#

If the empty cycle reproduces the particles and no visible damage is found, use the washer's Tub Clean or Self Clean procedure. Keep the tub empty. Use only the cleaner type and amount accepted for that model or stated in the cleaner instructions the manufacturer tells you to follow.

After cleaning, run the rinse the manufacturer requires, wipe accessible residue, and ventilate the machine. Then repeat one empty comparison cycle. If the flakes are gone, resume normal use with the correct detergent dose and maintenance interval. If they persist, move to the machine-type guide or request service.

Choose the correct machine-type path#

When to stop troubleshooting#

Stop and arrange service when particles continue after the approved maintenance sequence, a gasket or tub surface is damaged, the washer leaks, the machine makes a new mechanical noise, or flakes are accompanied by oil or deteriorating material. Preserve a photo and a small dry sample if practical, record the model and cycle, and tell support whether the particles appeared in an empty cycle.

That evidence is more useful than a confident internet label based on the color black.
