Severe washer shaking usually starts with installation and load checks: stop a machine that is walking or striking nearby objects, redistribute the load, confirm all feet are stable, and check shipping bolts on a newly installed front-loader.
Stop the cycle if the washer is moving#
A washer that walks across the floor, strikes a wall or cabinet, stretches its hoses, or bangs hard enough to move nearby objects should not be allowed to finish the cycle simply for observation. Pause or stop it using the normal controls. If that cannot be done safely, switch it off according to the manual.
Do not hold the washer in place with your body and do not reach behind a moving machine. Check for a leak or a pulled hose before restarting.
Was the washer just installed or moved?#
On a front-load washer, shipping bolts or other transport materials left in place can cause severe vibration and noise. Official manufacturer guidance treats this as an early installation check. Confirm the exact number and location in the manual and remove only the documented transport hardware using the supplied or specified tool.
Top-load washers do not use the same front-load shipping-bolt arrangement. Do not drill, loosen structural fasteners, or remove parts because a front-load video showed bolts on the back.
If the washer was moved, also check that hoses, the power cord, and nearby furniture are not striking the cabinet during spin.
Check the load before the machine#
Pause the cycle and look at how the laundry is distributed. A single bulky item, tangled bedding, a waterproof item, or a mixture of one heavy item with several light items can concentrate weight on one side. Very small and very large loads can both create balance problems on some models.
Redistribute the laundry evenly and select the cycle recommended for the item type. Do not force an item into a washer when its care label or the washer manual excludes machine washing. If the load is too full for items to move, remove part of it.
Run one comparison with an ordinary balanced load. If the violent shaking disappears, the load pattern is the useful evidence. If it remains, move to installation and leveling.
Confirm stable contact with the floor#
With the tub empty and the washer off, press opposite top corners and check whether the cabinet rocks. All feet should make firm contact with a hard, stable surface. Use a level if the manufacturer instructs it, and adjust only the leveling feet and locknuts described in the manual.
Do not compensate for a soft, broken, sloped, or slippery floor by unscrewing a foot far beyond its allowed range. Do not use loose cardboard, folded cloth, or an improvised wedge. If the floor itself moves, the installation surface may need correction.
After adjustment, tighten the locknuts where applicable and repeat the corner-rock test.
Run a bounded test#
Use the model's documented spin or rinse-and-spin test with a normal balanced load. Stay nearby. Watch whether vibration increases smoothly with speed or whether the cabinet suddenly walks, bangs, or tilts.
- Stable after load redistribution: the load was the primary branch.
- Stable after leveling: the installation was the primary branch.
- New front-loader becomes stable after removing shipping hardware: the transport setup was the primary branch.
- Still violent after all documented checks: stop and request service.
A successful empty spin does not prove every load will be stable. A failed test after proper installation and load checks does not prove which suspension, bearing, sensor, or tub component is at fault.
Check the display and beeps#
Some washers display an unbalance or vibration-related code while attempting to redistribute a load. Record the exact characters or blinking lights. When service is the correct next step#
Request service when the washer remains unstable after the documented installation and load checks, the drum appears displaced, the cabinet or tub strikes internally, there is leakage, a burning smell, visible damage, or a recurring sensor or motor code. Preserve the model number, installation date, load type, code, and a short video taken from a safe distance.
